Building new scanning probes

Cryogen-free dilution refrigerators, scanning SET tips, quantum twisting microscopy and multi-probe experiments — instruments built to make measurements that were not previously possible.

Draft text — edit freely.

Many of the most interesting questions about quantum materials require a measurement no commercial instrument can make. A large part of my work is designing, building and characterizing the instruments themselves.

Current and past developments

  • Scanning probe microscopes in cryogen-free dilution refrigerators, including vibration characterization and mitigation
  • The first scanning SET experiment in a cryogen-free dilution refrigerator, and the tip fabrication behind it
  • A quantum twisting microscope operating at millikelvin temperatures
  • Scanning gate microscopy for imaging two-level systems in transmon qubits, with the de Leon group
  • Infrastructure for multi-probe scanning experiments, with the Yacoby group
